My Defining Moment

My defining moment was when I cut my hair for Cancer last summer. My hair was down to my hips and I hated it a lot but was too scared to cut it, as I’ve always had long hair. But one day I came across a girl who had no hair, and had no complaints about it, as she couldn’t do anything about it.  I then realized that I was taking my hair for granted, when some people who wanted hair, could not grow it at all. I finally made the decision to cut my hair to cancer, so I could make someone happier with my hair then I ever would have been. I’ve always had long hair so it was a scary experience, but I cut 10 inches of my hair and donated it to the Canadian Cancer society. I took my hair for granted, and realized I shouldn’t be as some people have it a lot worse than I do. I noticed that I was taking advantage of my hair when I could be donating it to a better cause where they would appreciate my hair better then I would. This defined who I am because it taught me not to take things for granted, and to think about others before making a decision.

  2. I know that change can be a scary thing for some people I think it was a very brave and inspiring thing you did by donating so much of your hair for a good cause. The way you felt when you saw someone that was unable to grow hair also shows how sympathetic and caring you really are.

  4. It is a known fact that we all know someone who's life has been completely changed because of cancer. Even something as small as selling daffodils or something larger like donating your hair for wigs can cause a domino effect of happiness for so many others. Your hair cut is like the snowflake that caused the avalanche; small actions create big counter-actions, and in this case they were incredibly positive. Thank you for sharing this, you have reason to be very proud!

  5. Wow that's amazing, I have always wanted to cut my hair for cancer and donate it but like you I have been scared to do it because I love having long hair. But reading your story I think this summer I will donate my hair as well because I know so many people who have been affected by cancer and I would like to do my part to help.

  7. I really liked your post and how you noted that you took the hair for granted! I can definitely relate to this, as I had a dad who passed away from something similar to cancer and how it made my outlook on the value of life completely change. I'm sure someone has greatly benefited with a nice wig from your donation.

  8. I noticed you mentioned seeing the girl with no hair. Was she the main reason you decided to donate your hair? The empathy you showed demonstrates a lot about your character. Very inspiring.

  9. I think people often forget about the role hair plays in how we see ourselves and how others view us. Some people can just say, "It's only hair", but for many people, hair can be their defining feature. Without having the personal experience, I have heard that for some people one of the hardest parts of dealing with chemotherapy is the loss of their hair.

  10. Emily, its great that you took the initiative to cut your hair for the Canadian cancer society. Many of us have loved ones who have battled cancer and with you donating your hair, you've changed peoples lives by giving them the ability to have hair again.

  11. As I am cutting and donating my hair tomorrow, I can really relate to this moment. Although personally I don't hold much importance in my hair, I do understand the feeling of knowing that your hair can make a big impact on someone else's life as they struggle through illness. It's a brave thing to do, giving up your hair to a stranger, but I'm sure you really helped them through a troubling time.
